Department of Material Sciences and Process Engineering (MAP)

  • Any industrial value chain – for example in the area of wood products, food technology or biotechnology - relies on the conversion of raw materials, the characterization of materials and optimization of processes.

Mission statement

By way of its constituent institutes the Department of Materials Sciences and Process Engineering stands for Wood Technology and Renewable Materials, Physics and Materials Science, Chemical and Energy Engineering, as well as Molecular Modeling und Simulation. Research carried out at the department aims to achieve a thorough understanding and effecient conversion of renewable materials and resources considering their fossil-based and technical counterparts . Excellence in physical characterization methods, design of innovative materials, and engineering of process is complemented by computer-based modeling and simulation in order to be able to understand, explain, and predict experimental results on molecular  and higher levels.

In this context the Department of Materials Sciences and Process Engineering offers fundamental courses in physics, mechanical  engineering, process engineering and renewable materials, supplemented by a wide range of specialized courses.
